The  Scope of Practice as issued by the Allied Health Professions Council of SA (AHPCSA) to  a registered Therapeutic Reflexologist

The scope of practice of a registered therapeutic reflexologist (also known internationally as a zone therapist) shall entail the following acts, procedures and/or functions, that may be performed using suitable physical, biological, psychological, social, educational and other technological means applicable to the practice of health care practice in primary health care situations.

The following acts specifically pertain to the profession of a therapeutic reflexologist:

1. Verbal, physical assessment and evaluation of a patient's condition
   1.1     Verbal and physical assessment and evaluation of a patient's condition
             for the purpose of evaluating the state of health. The delivery of a
             treatment regimen to meet the needs of the patient.
   1.2      These acts may be inclusive of:-
              1.2.1   Taking of comprehensive case history.
              1.2.2   Assessing of the integumentary and myofascial structures.
              1.2.3   Determining and preparing of a suitable patient-specific
                        treatment protocol.
              1.2.4   Maintaining of comprehensive case records regarding the
                        condition and progress of the patient in his/her care, and of all
                        actions performed in connection with the patient.
   
   
2.  Application of therapeutic reflexology treatments
   2.1       Application of therapeutic reflexology treatments by the use of hands
              and or other associated reflexology equipment with reference to the
              treatment and prevention of conditions of illness in any patients by:-
              2.1.1   Therapeutic reflexology methods and routines of stimulation
                          – i.e the manual mobilization of soft tissue structures; reflex
                             stimulation.
              2.1.2    Relaxation techniques and methods.
              2.1.3    Homecare advice.
              2.1.4    Nutritional and lifestyle advice.
              2.1.5    The recommendation of suitable open sale unscheduled
                         preparations.
              2.1.6    The use of other modalities to enhance the reflexology
                         treatment, after appropriate training.
              2.1.7    Listening skills.
              2.1.8    Mobilisation of extremities after appropriate training.
              2.1.9    Therapeutic hand and foot care.
              2.1.10  Primary Health Care screening methods.
              2.1.11  Attend to patients outside of practice.
   
   
3. Promotion and maintenance of health
   3.1      The promotion and maintenance of health of the patient/s through:-
              3.1.1   Attention to hygiene, physical comfort, and reassurance of the
                        patient.
              3.1.2   Promotion of lifestyle changes that may include dietary advice,
                        exercise, rest and sleep with a view to assisting in the
                        rehabilitation of the patient.
              3.1.3   Education leading to the attainment of optimal health for the
                        individual.
              3.1.4   Delivery of emergency first aid treatment (including CPR), if 
                        necessary.
             3.1.5    Inter-disciplinary consultation, liaison and/or referral.
